Hard Rock Bands
Hard rock is a subgenre of rock music that first emerged in the mid 1960s, along with psychedelic rock and blues rock. It is characterised by the use of aggressive vocals, distorted instrumentation, driving rhythms, prominent bass drums, and cymbals for additional emphasis – all designed to make the music more powerful. Hard rock bands are well known for their lyrical emphasis on masculinity and sexuality, leading to the moniker of ‘cock rock’.
Hard rock music has often been compared to heavy metal music due to their common characteristics. Many bands have produced music that crosses between the two genres, which only adds to the confusion. However, the biggest differentiation between heavy metal bands and hard rock bands is that the former play with more volume and intensity.
International and Australian Hard Rock Bands
Hard rock music was first popularised in the 1970s thanks to Led Zeppelin, The Who, Aerosmith, Van Halen, and Australian hard rock band AC/DC. Other popular bands and artists known for producing hard rock music include Queen, Deep Purple, Alice Cooper, and Poison. Despite the subgenre losing popularity in the 1990s with the emergence of grunge and Britpop, many of these bands remain some of the most popular and best-selling music artists in history.
