Ska Punk Bands
The ska punk genre infuses punk rock with the upbeat rhythms and catchy instrumentations of ska music. Originating in Jamaica as a precursor to reggae, ska music typically features quick tempos, an upbeat drumbeat, and brass instruments to create a fast, fun vibe that’s perfect for dancing. As a result, the music of ska punk bands typically features a brass section, big bass lines, catchy rhythms, and a more upbeat energy than regular punk.
A Brief History
Ska was fused with punk rock in the UK in the 1970s, notably by ground-breaking bands such as The Clash, The Specials, The Beat, The Selecter, Madness, and Fishbone (a pioneer of the genre). More ska punk bands began to emerge in the 1980s, including Operation Ivy, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Mr Bungle, Culture Shock, Voodoo Glow Skulls, and Dance Hall Crashers.
It was only in the 1990s that the genre really entered the mainstream in the US, with ska punk albums from No Doubt and Sublime going multi-platinum. Songs by ska punk bands like the Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Reel Big Fish also featured in popular movies of the time, and today ska punk continues to thrive.
