Australian Thrash Metal Bands
Thrash metal is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music that originated in the 1980s in the United States. Characterised by fast tempo percussive beats, low register guitar riffs, and overall aggression, thrash metal artists often address social issues using direct and denunciatory language in their lyrics.
Four American thrash metal bands pioneered and popularised this genre, bringing it to its peak in the early 1990s. These bands – Anthrax, Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth – influenced the sound for bands in the United States, UK, Europe and Australia, which consequently saw local audiences increasing in numbers.
The peak for Australian thrash metal bands occurred from 1985 to 1992. Some of the most popular Australian thrash metal bands include Mortal Sin, Addictive, Renegade, Rampage, Armoured Angel, and Alchemist.
New Thrash Metal Bands
While thrash metal had its heyday in the 1980s, it has experienced a resurgence in recent times. Some older bands that disbanded in the 1980s have since reformed, and many new thrash metal bands have also sprouted. New bands such as Violator, Warbringer, Municipal Waste, Toxic Holocaust and Blood Tsunami offer diverse music, however many still draw lyrical and visual inspiration from older groups. In Australia, thrash metal garnered a steady rise in interest in the early 2000s, leading to the formation of many new thrash metal bands – including 4ARM.
