Trip hop

Trip Hop Artists

A subgenre of hip hop, trip hop originated in the early 1990s in the United Kingdom and is commonly described as a fusion of hip hop and electronic beats. Trip hop artists deliver a diverse and highly experimental sound that possesses qualities similar to ambient music. It also features drum-based breakdowns that are drawn from hip hop.

Once known as the Bristol sound, as that is where it originated, trip hop is now prevalent in many countries including the United States, Canada, Australia, and Costa Rica. Influences from other genres of music are largely apparent in trip hop, where you'll often hear dub, pop, house, R&B and techno in the mix. This means that trip hop is often confused with other genres such as downtempo, acid-jazz, nu-jazz and lounge. However, a distinctive quality that differentiates trip hop from other similar genres is the dark and tensioned tone that is present in most tracks.

Influencing the Sound of Mainstream Music

Trip hop received mainstream breakthrough in the early to mid-1990s, when independent record label Ninja Tune significantly influenced and defined the sound. Breakthrough artists of this time included Bustle & Out, DJ Food, Funki Porcini, The Herbaliser, and Up – amongst many others. Notable trip hop artists today include Massive Attack, Portishead, FKA Twigs, Morcheeba, and Bjork.
