House Music

House music is a derivative of the electronic music genre that originated in Chicago in the early 1980s, rising to prominence in the late 1980s and well into the 1990s.

While early house music possesses similar characteristics to disco music, it also has its vast differences. House is characterised by repetitive 4/4 beats, drum machine rhythms, cymbals, and synthesised bass lines – all designed to make the music more electronic and minimalistic. Because it offers a clean and simple base, it is one of the easiest music styles to combine with other genres to produce a new sound, such as acid house, jump house, tribal house, and deep house.

International & Australian House Music Artists

House music has proven to be a very commercially successful genre, with many prominent international artists dominating the charts and airwaves worldwide – including Kaskade, Fedde Le Grand, David Guetta, and Deadmau5. The genre has also spilled into the mainstream music scene, with artists such as Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Lady Gaga and The Black Eyed Peas having incorporated the genre into their work.

Many Australian house music artists have found success too, with much Australian house music making waves on international dance floors and at large-scale music festivals. Notable names include Yolanda Be Cool, Rogue Traders, Stafford Brothers, and Sneaky Sound System.
