Grunge Music

Originating in and around Seattle in the mid 1980s, Grunge is a subgenre of rock music widely considered to be a fusion of hardcore punk and heavy metal. Grunge combines angst-filled lyrics that address socio-political issues such as social alienation and a desire for freedom with slower tempos and elaborate instrumentation. A common characteristic of both hardcore punk and heavy metal music in grunge bands is the use of distorted electric guitars.

By the early 1990s, grunge was attracting large audiences and major record deals. This explosion in popularity was largely due to grunge bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Stone Temple Pilots achieving significant commercial success from alternative rock albums. Live performances were minimalistic, high energy, and without elaborate stage productions, allowing people to focus on the music itself.
